I have been doing research on my uncle, SSgt La Verne F Lowe, who served in Co E, 119th Inf Reg, 30th Inf Div from approximately 15 Aug 1944 to 23 Nov 1944. His unit was attached to the 2nd Armored Div from 11 Nov 1944 to 28 Nov 1944. Through graves registration records I obtained, my uncle was killed in or near Baesweiler Germany on 23 Nov 1944, Thanksgiving Day. The 2d Armd Div set up its command post in Baesweiler on 24 Nov 1944. My uncle received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart posthumously, which I have displayed in my dining room. I also have the commendation for his Bronze Star.
He is buried at Margraten Cemetery, and I visited his grave in 1980. I have made contact with the family that has adopted his grave, and will be visiting Margraten and the area again from 12 Aug to 14 Aug of this year, with my family and to visit and thank the adoptive family. I have all letters written home by my uncle during his time in the service, including the ETO. I would be happy to provide further information about my uncle, and would be interested to find anyone or relatives of anyone who may have served in Co E of the 119th at the time my uncle was with that unit.
In one of his letters, he identifies his platoon leader as "Holly", whom he liked and admired, and Mr. Tower told me this man was Harold L. Holycross. This platoon was instrumental in the assault on Seigfreid Line near Rimburg and Ubach between 2 and 5 October 1944 as described in a historical account detailed in either a book about the 30th or the 119th Regimental History, I am not sure.
