Hello. My great uncle was in the 30th, I think, in WWI. I know this is a WWII message board, but I was hoping someone here could help me determine if I am correct that he was in the 30th. The only thing I have to go on is what is on his grave marker, which reads:
CO.C.102.INF.A.E.F
His name was Ernest Hile, from Lincoln City, IN. I think that the writing on the marker indicates Company C, 102nd Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Force. I found some other young men from southern Indiana that were in the same company and regiment, and they were listed as 30th Division.
There is hardly anything left in my family regarding his military service. I have his "formal" portrait in his uniform with a beautiful US Army frame around it. Ernie died in France on August 10, 1918.
I'm just starting to research my great-uncle's history. Any pointers or information would be greatly appreciated!!!
Dear Mr. Hile: The 102nd Inf. Reg't. was NOT a part of the 30th Division in WWI. The 102nd Inf. Reg't was the Connecticut National Guard. The 30th had the 117th, 118th, 119th and the 120th Inf. Regiments in WWI.
In the event this was a typo on the gravestone, and should have been 120th, I have researched this and do not find the name of Ernest Hile as having been KIA with the 120th.
If you get more info on this I may be able to assist you. Please contact me at: towersfw@windstream.net Frank W. Towers, President & Historian, 30th Inf. Div. Veterans of WWII.
