Dear Robert, Your great uncle served with my father as one of his platoon sergeants in K Company, 120th IR , 30th Division. My father, Captain Marvin M. Smith, was Company Commander of Co. K until July 28, 1944 when he was wounded the day following Sgt. Byers death, during the Battle of St. Lo. There is actually a brief account of Sgt. Byers death written in my fathers memoirs. If you reply with your address, I would be happy to send you a copy. Your great uncle was a very courageous soldier. Even now, it saddens me to read this account, because I know my father cared deeply for each of the men in his command and often expressed his sorrow and regret regarding their fate, even many years after the war. Please contact me and I can direct you to several individual records and histories directly relating to your great uncles war service. How fortunate it is I found and read your post! marcus@qroidaho.net
